10.14.08 Totally Textual
|
It's so insane how text messaging has so quickly taken over as a primary method of communicating. I got my first cell phone when I was 12 and back then, that was a BIG DEAL. I insisted that I "needed" one since I was so involved with sports and school stuff. So one Easter, my mom surprised me with the new Nokia cell phone. Texting wasn't even around. Ringtones were lame and sounded like door chimes, and I was just cool not to have a pager like most of my friends. I used to buy colored plastic covers for my NOKIA cell phone that had, get this ... an ANTENNA. What a memory. The screen was only black and white ... no cool color screen. Who ever thought, 10 years later, most of our conversations would exist through TEXT. Some texts even sing, dance, flash, have glitter, smiley faces ... it's honestly amazing. A few words here and there that determined plans, thoughts, break ups, and entire conversations! At night, I rarely answer my phone. I usually ignore the call and send a text. Texting allows us to be hermits, but stay social. It's bitter sweet. Is anyone with me on this one ... that texting has ruined the concept of dating?! Those precious phone chats in the beginning of a relationships are now texts here and there during work, dinner, meetings, and EVEN when you're totally available to be on the phone. Still, just a text.
Don't get me wrong. I love new technology and I love how our society is evolving, but it's kind of sad to see how it takes a toll and changes the way PEOPLE communicate. Yeah, it's easier, but it's also lots of trouble. Texts don't have a tone of voice, but we certainly act like that do. Constantly texting the people you date also rushes the whole "getting to know you" period, which in my eyes, is the most fun! Next time you go to pick up your phone to text someone ... just think first ... sometimes calling can mean THAT MUCH MORE.
