Remember when "FRIDAY" and "TGIF" meant a sweet line up of sitcoms on television? Back then, Friday was a reason to pig out on popcorn and pizza while watching Step By Step and Family Matters with your BFF. Between 3rd grade and 6th grade, my best friend Christina and I would have a sleepover ever Friday night, watch TGIF, and prank call our mutual crush, Kyle. Well actually, we said his name with more of a sing song every time it rolled off our tongues. It was more like ... "Kyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyle!" The night would usually end with her calling her mom to complain of a stomach ache and it wouldn't end up being a slumber party. She'd go home.
Eventually as we got a little older, Friday started to mean different things. It meant QUIZ DAY and softball games in middle school. In High School it meant working until 10 and meeting up at "the docks" for a party. (So weird how kids find random places to hang out and drink 40's of NATURAL ICE) In college, it seemed like Friday was the start to a whole new life. Friday meant goodbye classes, hello bartending to pay the rent. Friday-Sunday kicked work into high gear... with of course post-work-party-time in the city that never sleeps. :) You have to work hard to play hard right?
What is Friday now? What does TGIF really mean to you? We all find different ways to chill and celebrate the end of a week, but now that we're doing the whole "adult thing" ... what has TGIF become? For some it means HAPPY HOUR, for others it means relaxation, and for most I think it means escaping the 9-5 ritual for a couple days just to do it all over again on Monday.
Sometimes I wish life was still as simple as it seemed back when "TGIF" meant GOOD TELEVISION shows, but how much fun would that be? I was just having this conversation with my best friend from high school, Christine. She just got her under grad in Political Science and is totally overwhelmed with the unpleasant side effects of the sickness she's suffering from...adulthood. Being "Miss Optimism," I started to go through the whole thought process of growing up and even the simple meaning of what the weekend is for us. As we get older, we accept more responsibilities... but we also get to have so much more fun. We're actually ALLOWED to drink legally. Yeah, we have to pay electric bills, rent, car payments, student loans, whatever ... but we also get to enjoy the simple pleasures of this crazy thing we call life.
So, THANK GOODNESS IT'S FRIDAY... but really, I'm just thankful for opportunity, friends, family, fun, and the idea of a future.
